I hope that you and your families are keeping fit and well. Like many businesses, we’re experiencing some tough times and I wanted to give you a quick update on how/what we’re doing.
Just before we knew of COVID-19, we had committed to invest in a major project to knock down the wall in our tiny kitchen and expand it through the disabled toilet. At the time of closure, we had just finished building a new disabled toilet in the changing-room and all the fancy kitchen equipment was arriving. The building work is being carried out by Myles (Dad of Charlie in our Performance Squad) and Will. Both great guys and clearly very skilled. We’ll post developments on social media when we’re able to get this going again.
In addition to the café build, we’ve also been building a new shop to stock a wide range of Patagoina clothing. Patagonia is a beautiful company to work with as they put environmental considerations at the forefront of everything they do. We like this and we’re sure you’re going to love them too.
The biggest thing to report is that Boulder Shack has maintained a level of financial stability. Dave (our financial guru) and I have forecast multiple scenarios based on reopening for each month from now to October. Of course, we would like to open as soon as possible, but must plan for every eventuality. We estimate that, should we reopen in mid-July, this time would have cost the business around £40k and will leave around 18 months of debt repayments and financial rebuilding in its wake.
There are three things that have collectively kept us on track. Everyone (except Dave) is on furlough, the government have granted us £25k, and over 200 Boulder Shack members have kept their membership running. This last one has genuinely moved me and is without a doubt a major part of us keeping afloat. Thank you to everyone who has been able to do this!
How and when we reopen is a question I would love to be able to answer, but we just don’t know. What I can say is that, when this opportunity presents itself, we will continue to make the best decisions we can with the advice and guidance received. Any plans will be announced on our website and social media as soon as we make them.
There’s a lot of talk about what the “new normal” will be for the world when we return. Amongst the hardship, there are clearly some valuable lessons being taught and we really want to learn from this time. Partly inspired by this, we will be launching a tree-planting scheme when we reopen. The details are still being worked out, but it’s likely that we’ll work with a tree-planting organisation to plant a tree for every membership payment every month.
So that’s where we are for now. Please do check out our Facebook, Instagram and YouTube feeds – there’s some brilliant content going out at the moment that lots of you are engaging with. It’s great to keep that connection with you!
All the best and stay safe,
