We can’t wait for Earth Day at Shack! We’ll be joining more than a billion people who celebrate Earth Day (the world’s largest environmental movement for creating a sustainable future) on Friday 22nd April.

Come along to meet inspiring local environmental experts and get advice on how we can make a difference to our planet, as well as take full advantage of our special offers available from 10am-10pm!

There’s no need to sign up in advance, just turn up and enjoy the day!

Local environmental organisations will be popping-up in our cafe area from 12pm-8pm, including: Hampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust, Soton Greenpeace, Soton Friends of the Earth, Soton AXO and Soton Extinction Rebellion.

We’ll also have Earth Day themed food on sale all day which includes:

Earth day cookies which are tasty chocolate chip cookies with blue and green M&Ms.

Around the world vegan pizza, which is a delicious BBQ base pizza with onions, sweetcorn, mushrooms and spinach, topped with melty vegan cheese.

What else are we doing?

We pride ourselves on making considered sustainable choices, here are just some of the ways we are making a difference:

Reducing plastic 

Mia has been the Shack’s Cafe Manager for the last year and a half. She said: “Part of my job has been to look into the sustainability of the food and drink we serve at the Shack. In this time, I have reduced the amount of plastic packed products we have in our chilly-chill-chiller.

“We are about to start a drive to collect plastic bags from the cafe and kitchen and direct them to recycling.”

Reducing food waste

Most of our products are baked on the premises, with very little food waste and less carbon footprint than ordering in.

Using local products

We stock local products where we can and choose our suppliers carefully to try and make sure the products we offer to the climbing community have sustainable packaging and a low carbon footprint.

Our coffee is roasted on the other side of Southampton by SOroast. The beans are all specialty grade and sourced from farms and co-ops they trust and share ethical values with. They’re delivered fresh, usually when one of the guys is popping in for a climb, so no wasted fuel there!

Mia adds: “Pretty much all of our food offerings can be made vegetarian or vegan – just ask!”

Using sustainable suppliers

We are proud to stock:

Tenzing, the world’s first carbon negative energy drink, who provides sustainable packaging that is infinitely recyclable.

Minor Figures, who make vegan-friendly, cold-brew coffee. The whole product line is plant based and they’re carbon neutral and committed to sustainability!

What our staff think

We asked Amy, our Duty Manager, why preserving and protecting the environment is important to her. She said “it’s because the planet is filled with so many extraordinary creatures and wildlife, we need to help them thrive, this isn’t just our planet.”
